Introductory Speech Essay Example for Free

Introductory Speech Essay Introduction: Someone once said; a picture paints a thousand words. To me that’s a hundred percent true. I started photography when I was at a young age, around twelve. I carried my camera everywhere I went to capture every memory, every scenery that was around me in one simple photo. I love the fact that with film, you’re stuck with the photo on paper, whereas with digital you can delete it and lose it forever. Here are some reasons why I brought in my film camera, not only does it describe my passion for photography, but the lenses I look through can capture my life in a click. Thesis: I think my film camera reveal a lot about me – not only my everyday activities and hobbies, but the events that happen through my life. Body: Preview: If you look closely at the camera, you can tell how old it is and how much it has been used. 1. I am a creative person a. I take pictures of anything, from landscapes, to random objects lying around on the ground – in which I create something out of it. b. I’m into art, not only do I take photographs, but when I do I tend to paint them to enlarge them. Transition: The interior of my camera can tell you a lot about what I do with the roll of film, but when developed, they also can provide clues to who I am and where I have been. 1. I love to be outdoors, and with family a. As for taking pictures of friends and families, people pass away, they change, and when Im in school I know Ill probably never see them again so I like to have the memories. i. I only get to see family once a year, and capturing the rare moments we have together is what makes the moments seem to last forever. b. The film inside (when present and developed) also provides a lot of photos that capture my life outside. i. I enjoy going camping, I spend my majority of the time out walking and enjoying the colors and surroundings of the outdoors. ii. I personally enjoy taking pictures of scenery because I like to capture nature before its destroyed but also because its always changing. Conclusion: So you can see my camera captures the creative side of me. It has been a witness to my everyday adventures and the many journeys. You could learn a lot about me by looking at the photographs I have taken. When Im behind my camera, I sometimes feel like Im looking at the world through someone elses eyes.

Theme of Power Corruption in Animal Farm, by George Orwell Essay

Power can have the persuasive action in undoing the moral ethics of one’s character. This can be seen throughout history, such as World War II and proven by the actions of Napoleon in the allegory, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. As Lord Acton said â€Å"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.† In history what was viewed as a villain or wrong doer is never the same as the perception. A leader does not begin wanting to do wrong, they start with the best intentions, but power is a tricky thing, showcased in Animal Farm as Utopian ideals but with failed practices. Most new societies that have a Utopian idea most likely stem from a traumatic event where humanity believed it had no other choice but to go to the extreme. Animal Farm does the same thing; these animals feel mistreated by their leader, Mr. Jones so they follow the pigs in order to create a Utopia. In The Giver, by Ray Bradbury, everything appears perfect but there is a glitch that is often hidden in the powers that rule. In The Giver it was the simple truth of life and how they, the powers that ruled, deemed to control it in order to create their own Utopia. These powers, whether the government is one single ruling body, or many, the slow gain of power feeds and justifies any wrong doing. As Napoleon first started out along with the other pigs, they made the seven commandments. Napoleon enforced "The Seven Commandments† which include statements such as, â€Å"Whatever goes up on two legs is an enemy,† â€Å"No animal shall wear clothes,† â€Å"No animal shall drink alcohol,† and â€Å"No animal shall kill any other animal.† By the end of the book, Napoleon breaks all of these commandments for his personal gain. Napoleon uses his power to alter the commandments in order t... ...mal Farm. Ed. Terry O'Neill. San Diego, Calif.: Greenhaven Press, 1998. 70-81. Rpt. in Short Story Criticism. Ed. Joseph Palmisano. Harmful Effects and Implications of Accent Discrimination

Harmful effects and implications of accent discrimination Harmful effects on ESL learners As concluded by Munro (2003), accent discrimination has played a negative effect on many situations. Some of the most common cases include discrimination in hiring process, in employment, and even resulting in harassments. As a harmful result, second language users are facing negative forces that may cause them to question beyond the issue. One example is these learners start questioning their own characteristics.Aspects such as skin color, dress, and other behaviors fall into the category, and soon, these second language users will show decrease in self-esteem, questioning if the issue is more than just accent. When this happens, most people with low confidence and unwilling to confront issues, will chose to avoid situation that requires oral communications, resulting the stage of avoiding contact with native speakers. The second stage starts when these low self-esteem learners seek companion.A nd because their lack of effort in talking with their ESL teachers, it is more likely that they find people with similar situations. These second language learners, who have experienced accent discrimination, will form a self-protective group. Inside this group, they are free to communicate in their first language and regain self-confidence. Unfortunately, as a result, they begin losing interest in improving their English and focus their social lives within the group. This can be summarized as lose of motivation. If no one interferes with this group of people, sooner or later, the group of people will start to feel isolated and disconnected with the native Canadians, leaving the accent discrimination issue unsolved, and even causing reversed effects, such as hostility and more discrimination towards the nation. This is the end of the cycle where people lose faith in believing Canada is an equal opportunity country that welcomes diversified culture. As we can see, the issue has turned from an accent level into a national prejudice level.Implication Despite some people are experiencing the process described above, more and more people with accent issues are taking their steps to reduce the problem. To speak with a more accurate and understandable language, many learners are investing both their time and money so they might have a better future. Over the past few years, enrollment in classes that help reduce accent has increased significantly (Gorman, 2007). In some situations, poor second language speakers are being placed responsible for their oral English ability. In the US, it is consider that graduate teaching assistants must achieve a certain level of proficiency in spoken English, as this is a developing policy by the Institutions of higher education (Thomas, 1993). For some institutions, teaching assistants with low oral English teaching skills are required to first successfully complete courses in English before they can serve as a teaching assistant. Acco rding to Statistic Canada, it is predicted that a steady increase in the number of immigrants to this country will occur throughout the decade. By 2006 there are over 1. 4 million Chinese in Canada (Stat. ca, 2006). The size is projected to double within 20 years. As Canada becomes a globalized country with increasingly multicultural exposure, the notion of an â€Å"accent† may change and increase in types. As a nation, only by becoming increasingly skilled in our ability to understand English spoken with various accents and be warm in attitudes toward all accents, can we live up to the reputation of welcoming diversity. Communication is a two-way process. Both the speaker and the listener have a responsibility for the act of communication. While different or foreign accents can sometimes interfere with the listener's ability to understand the message, accents can conjure up negative evaluations of the speaker, reducing the listener's willingness to accept their responsibility in the communication process. Sometimes, it becomes easy to say, â€Å"I simply can't understand you,† placing full responsibility for the communication process on the speaker. We all have standards and preferences about the spoken language; and certain accents can take more effort to understand. It is to be hoped, though, that we can make an effort to hear the content of the message and look beyond the stereotypes associated with the way the message is being spoken. Friedman (2004) suggests several steps for ESL teachers when working with someone who is difficult to understand. First, don't pretend to understand. Ask the person to slow down a bit because you are having difficulty understanding them. Second, don't rush. Slow down yourself. Third, resist the temptation to shout. The speaker is not hard of hearing. Fourth, avoid being rude. Ask for help from others if you need it.As a global citizen, we interact with newcomers to the communities, with businesspersons from aroun d the globe, and with individuals and families who are at various stages in the process of developing Standard English speaking skills. I believe respect for diversity can be extended over language and speech. Modeling supportive behavior ourselves is an important step. Further, we can encourage others to confront the stereotypes and prejudices that are often associated with specific speech patterns. ————————————————- Bibliography Friedman, N. I Am A Business That I Have Selected Essay - 1744 Words

The company that I have selected is a business that I just recently started, and it is known as Cee Love Jewelry. I came up with the name from the first letter of my name which starts with C and I tend to write love all the time when I am bored. One day I saw a movie called See Love, and it just came to me as Cee Love for good company name. I make monogrammed stamped necklaces and bracelets. I started this company for about three months now, but I think I chose to go into this business because of my love for jewelry and designing names on jewelry. I am always getting requests for monogrammed necklaces, and my clients always give positive feedback. I place the jewelry in a small satin pouch, and place it in a jewelry box and wrap the box up with a gold ribbon on the top. Most business starts off small and gradually makes their way up like mines. My goal is to expand my company’s horizons, and be a business that people are familiar with when they hear the company name. One problem that I am having is that I get so many requests at one time, and have to get them done in a short amount of time. This becomes problematic and stressful when I absolutely have no help. Being rushed for a certain time limit, is hard work and things can go wrong. I want my customer’s to be very pleased with my work, and show my work of to their friends and co-workers. I need someone to be able to help me with certain things, and teach them how to make the jewelry.
